Summer Photography Tips

NYC Water Taxi - Way to go!
NYC Water Taxi – Way to go!

Photography is great all year round and summer is a wonderful time to get out there and take amazing photos. Let us look at some summer photography tips and ideas to take photos that you will be proud of.

Firstly, let us make it very clear that having a good camera is great, but if you know what you are doing you will get great shots even with a throwaway camera. In other words, the person behind the camera is just as important as the camera you are using. So, the first tip is to work with what you have.

Travel photography is wonderful, but you do not have to travel far. Right in your neighborhood, town, city and state, there are interesting things to photograph. The second tip is that you do not have to travel far to get great photos. You can photograph at the same location at different times of the day from different angles and so on.

The next thing to note is that you do not need a lot of gear. One camera (take off the lens cover and get a haze filter on it), a zoom lens, a monopod, a diffuser, memory card (class 10 or the fastest speed your camera will take) rechargeable batteries and your charger. Many people have tablets, so if you have one it is much lighter and smaller to carry around so you can always back up your photos at the end of the day or as you go along. That is it for now. Please feel free to post comments and in my next post you will see some photos.

Rockefeller Center -Tree Lighting Ceremony 2012

Christmas in New York City

Hello world,

This is the first in a series of posts on the best places to visit and the special holiday events in New York City during the holidays and winter. Trust that you will not miss one post especially if you are planning a trip to New York. Tonight at 7pm the world’s most famous Christmas Tree will be lit at the Rockefeller Center in New York City. If yo are from out of state, please get there early so you can get a good spot. As expected, there is always a huge crowd.

Rockefeller Center is famous for many things New York. At the very top of the building you have Top of the Rock where yo get the most magnificent view of New York city. Inside Rockefeller Center there is also the famous NBC Studios (a daily tour is available) and several shops and restaurants. Of course, there is also the skating rink and not far away some really great stores.

Getting to Rockefeller Center is very simple if you take the subway. If you can get to Times Square you can walk over or you can take the B,D, and F trains to 47th Street Rockefeller Center. If you cannot make it tonight to the ceremony, the tree will be there until about January 7th or so. Try to get your picture before it starts drying up. If you follow me on Twitter you will see a photo by Friday the latest.
If you cannot attend – then watch it live on NBC – Channel 4.

Tomorrow I will write about Bryant Park, another must visit attraction when visiting New York at any time but especially in the winter.

PDN Photo Plus Expo in New York City

CANON BOOTH at PDN PhotoPlus Expo in NYC

Hello world,

The PDN Photo Plus Expo is on at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City.  Yesterday was the first day open to the public and it was really well supported.  I can only imagine what today and tomorrow will be like.  Like last year, Nikon, Canon, Sony, Bay Photo, Smug Mug, and Epson are everywhere.  Not to be outdone is Blurb, the book people.  Their setup is like a living room with beautiful white leather sofa.  it is awesome.  When you get tired you can sit and relax at Blurb.  Also, they are giving you a 20% discount on your next book published with them.

Unique Photo out of New jersey was also very big.  So too, Adorama our photo people down the block from superpower     B & H Photo Video.  B&H has shuttle buses for two days since they are closed on Saturday.  The workshops are interesting and informative.  The have brought out the top guns. Gary Fong is there, Manfrotto, Wescott, HP, PNY, Tamron, Sigma, OnOne Software, and many more.   I found a company who makes something similar to a pocket wizard for less than half the price and it worked well when I tried it.

If you are a photographer, or even a tourist with a point and shoot camera, you will love Photo Plus Expo.  It is epic.  Tomorrow is the last day so get there early.  Of course, apart from the general sessions and the booths, thee are seminars, lectures and even portfolio reviews.  If you are serious about photography all roads lead to Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City this weekend.  Get there today or tomorrow.

Enjoy the pictures from the Photo Plus Expo.
